The Cornerstone

Gospel
Matthew 21:33-43

Gospel Acclamation

I have chosen you from the world, says the Lord, to go and bear fruit that will remain.

33 Jesus said to the chief priests and the elders of the people: “Hear another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a hedge around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a tower. Then he leased it to tenants and went on a journey. 34 When vintage time drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to obtain his produce. 35 But the tenants seized the servants and one they beat, another they killed, and a third they stoned. 36 Again he sent other servants, more numerous than the first ones, but they treated them in the same way. 37 Finally, he sent his son to them, thinking, ‘They will respect my son.’ 38 But when the tenants saw the son, they said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and acquire his inheritance.’ 39 They seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. 40 What will the owner of the vineyard do to those tenants when he comes?” 41 They answered him, “He will put those wretched men to a wretched death and lease his vineyard to other tenants who will give him the produce at the proper times.” 42 Jesus said to them, “Did you never read in the Scriptures: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; by the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes? 43 Therefore, I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit.”

Introduction

Jesus tells a powerful parable about a landowner who planted a vineyard and entrusted it to tenants. When the owner sent his servants to collect the fruits, the tenants abused and killed them. Finally, he sent his son, thinking they would respect him, but they killed him as well. Through this parable, Jesus reveals God's immense patience, humanity's rejection of His messengers, and the consequences of rejecting the Son of God.

Historical Background

The imagery of the vineyard was familiar to the Jewish people. In the Old Testament, particularly Isaiah 5:1-7, Israel is portrayed as God's vineyard. The landowner represents God, the vineyard symbolizes His chosen people, the servants are the prophets sent throughout history, and the son represents Jesus Christ.

The religious leaders of Jesus' time clearly understood that the parable was directed at them. They had repeatedly rejected God's prophets and were now plotting against Jesus Himself. This teaching came during the final week before Christ's crucifixion in Jerusalem.

Theological Context

Everything belongs to God. We are stewards, not owners, of His gifts. The owner repeatedly sent servants despite their mistreatment, reflecting God's enduring mercy toward sinners. The killing of the son foreshadows Jesus' death at the hands of those who rejected Him. Jesus quotes Psalm 118:22: "The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone." Though rejected, Christ becomes the foundation of salvation. God's kingdom is entrusted to those who bear its fruits through faith, obedience, and love.

Learning Lessons

God Expects Fruitfulness. Faith is not merely belief but a life that bears fruits of righteousness, compassion, humility, and service.

Rejecting God's Voice Has Consequences. The tenants repeatedly ignored the owner's messengers. We must remain open to God's guidance through Scripture, prayer, and wise counsel.

Jesus Is the Cornerstone. A life built on Christ stands firm. Rejecting Him leaves us without a solid foundation.

Stewardship Is a Sacred Responsibility. Our talents, resources, relationships, and opportunities are entrusted to us by God. We are accountable for how we use them.

God's Grace Invites Conversion. Even after repeated rejection, the owner continued reaching out. God's mercy always offers us another chance to return to Him.

Reflection for the Day

Today's Gospel asks us a simple but challenging question: What fruits am I producing for God?
It is possible to be busy with religious activities yet fail to offer God the fruits of love, forgiveness, kindness, and obedience. The tenants forgot that the vineyard belonged to the owner. Likewise, we sometimes act as if our lives belong solely to us.

Jesus, the rejected cornerstone, invites us to build our entire lives upon Him. Every day we are given opportunities to listen to His voice, welcome His presence, and produce fruits that glorify God.

Let us examine our hearts today. Are there areas where we resist God's will? Are we attentive to His call? May we become faithful stewards who joyfully offer the fruits of a life rooted in Christ.

Poem

"The Cornerstone"

A vineyard rich beneath God's sky,
Entrusted hands were standing by.
Yet hearts grew hard and pride took reign,
Rejecting love again, again.

The servants came with words of grace,
Yet violence met each faithful face.
The Father's Son at last was sent,
His mercy vast, His purpose meant.

Rejected stone, despised by men,
You rose to life and reign again.
The Cornerstone on which we stand,
The Savior of every tribe and land.

Lord, make our hearts like fertile ground,
Where faith and love may still be found.
And may the fruits our lives impart
Bring joy to Your most Sacred Heart.

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ,

You are the Cornerstone rejected by the builders and chosen by the Father as the foundation of our salvation. Forgive us for the times we have ignored Your voice, resisted Your will, and failed to bear the fruits You desire from our lives.

Teach us to be faithful stewards of the gifts You have entrusted to us. Fill our hearts with humility, gratitude, and courage to follow You each day. May our actions reflect Your love, our words proclaim Your truth, and our lives bear abundant fruit for Your Kingdom.

When we are tempted by pride or selfishness, remind us that everything we have comes from You. Help us to welcome Your presence and respond faithfully to Your call.

Lord Jesus, make us living stones built upon You, the eternal Cornerstone. May our lives glorify the Father and lead others closer to Your loving Heart. For Yours is the Kingdom, the power, and the glory forever and ever.

Amen.
