Splinter in Brother's Eye

"Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye,
but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own?"
(Luke 6:41)

As disciples of Christ, we are called to reflect His teachings and character in our lives. By striving to live out these principles, we can be a positive influence on those around us and demonstrate the love of Christ in practical ways. Before we judge or correct others, we must first examine our own lives and address our own shortcomings. This encourages us to practice humility and self-awareness. By acknowledging our own faults, we can approach others with compassion and understanding rather than judgment.

Hypocrisy is dangerous and can lead to misguided actions and judgments. By focusing on our own spiritual growth and integrity, we can avoid the pitfalls of hypocrisy and be more authentic in our faith. When we do need to correct others, it should be done with a clear understanding and a compassionate heart. This teaches us to approach others with love and empathy, aiming to help rather than condemn.

We should seek guidance from those who are spiritually mature and knowledgeable. Choosing mentors and leaders who reflect Christ-like qualities helps us grow in our faith and avoid being misled.

39 Jesus told his disciple a parable: “Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit? 40 No disciple is superior to the teacher; but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his teacher. 41 Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me remove that splinter in your eye,’ when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother’s eye.” (Luke 6:39-42)

Dear Lord Jesus, as Your disciples, we seek to reflect Your teachings and character in our lives. Help us to live out Your principles, so we may be a positive influence on those around us and demonstrate Your love in practical ways. Before we judge or correct others, guide us to first examine our own lives and address our own shortcomings. Grant us the humility and self-awareness to acknowledge our faults, so we may approach others with compassion and understanding rather than judgment. Protect us from the dangers of hypocrisy, which can lead to misguided actions and judgments. Help us focus on our own spiritual growth and integrity, so we may be authentic in our faith. When we need to correct others, let it be done with a clear understanding and a compassionate heart, aiming to help rather than condemn. Lead us to seek guidance from those who are spiritually mature and knowledgeable. May we choose mentors and leaders who reflect Your qualities, helping us grow in our faith and avoid being misled. In Your holy name, we pray. Amen.

We should live our lives with clear goals and direction, focusing on what truly matters. This involves avoiding aimlessness and pursuing our spiritual goals with determination. There is also the necessity for discipline and self-control. Our mission is not optional but essential which requires us to embrace our spiritual responsibilities with urgency, dedication, and understanding so that we can fulfill our divine calling. Let us reflect Christ’s example of servanthood by giving priority in serving others over asserting our own rights, meet people where they are, understanding their contexts and needs to effectively share the gospel.

16 Brothers and sisters: If I preach the Gospel, this is no reason for me to boast, for an obligation has been imposed on me, and woe to me if I do not preach it! 17 If I do so willingly, I have a recompense, but if unwillingly, then I have been entrusted with a stewardship. 18 What then is my recompense? That, when I preach, I offer the Gospel free of charge so as not to make full use of my right in the Gospel. 19 Although I am free in regard to all, I have made myself a slave to all so as to win over as many as possible. 22 I have become all things to all, to save at least some. 23 All this I do for the sake of the Gospel, so that I too may have a share in it. 24 Do you not know that the runners in the stadium all run in the race, but only one wins the prize? Run so as to win. 25 Every athlete exercises discipline in every way. They do it to win a perishable crown, but we an imperishable one. 26 Thus I do not run aimlessly; I do not fight as if I were shadowboxing. 27 No, I drive my body and train it, for fear that, after having preached to others, I myself should be disqualified. (1 Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-27)

Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts open and minds focused on Your divine purpose for our lives. Guide us to live with clear goals and direction, always focusing on what truly matters. Help us to avoid aimlessness and pursue our spiritual goals with unwavering determination. Grant us the discipline and self-control needed to stay on the path You have set before us. Remind us that our mission is not optional but essential, and give us the urgency, dedication, and understanding to embrace our spiritual responsibilities fully. May we reflect Christ’s example of servanthood in all that we do. Teach us to prioritize serving others over asserting our own rights. Help us to meet people where they are, understanding their contexts and needs, so that we may effectively share the gospel and Your love. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

God can turn our hardships into sources of refreshment and blessing. We should always trust in God’s ability to bring good out of difficult situations. Just as the sparrow and swallow find safety and a place to raise their young, we too can find peace and security when we draw close to God. True happiness and fulfillment come from a life centered around worship and communion with God. Those who find their strength in God and set their hearts on a spiritual journey are blessed. Let us make it a priority to spend time in God’s presence through prayer, worship, and reading His Word.

3 My soul yearns and pines for the courts of the Lord. My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. (R) 4 Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest in which she puts her young—Your altars, O Lord of hosts, my king and my God! (R) 5 Blessed they who dwell in your house! continually they praise you. 6 Blessed the men whose strength you are! their hearts are set upon the pilgrimage. (R) 12 For a sun and a shield is the Lord God; grace and glory he bestows; The Lord withholds no good thing from those who walk in sincerity. (Psalm 84:3, 4, 5-6, 12)

Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts full of trust, knowing that You can turn our hardships into sources of refreshment and blessing. Help us to always believe in Your ability to bring good out of difficult situations. Just as the sparrow and swallow find safety and a place to raise their young, may we too find peace and security when we draw close to You. Grant us true happiness and fulfillment through a life centered around worship and communion with You. Bless those who find their strength in You and set their hearts on a spiritual journey. May we always prioritize spending time in Your presence through prayer, worship, and reading Your Word. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
