Granting a Wish

The king said to the girl,
“Ask of me whatever you wish
and I will grant it to you.”
(Mark 6:22)

John’s suffering and eventual martyrdom foreshadowed Christ’s own suffering. Just as John accepted the end of his earthly life, we’re reminded that following Christ may involve sacrifice and suffering, but it ultimately leads to eternal life. May we emulate John’s boldness, seek inner transformation, and endure faithfully, trusting in God’s promises.

Standing up for God’s principles may come at a cost, but it’s essential to speak truth even in difficult circumstances. Potential lies within even the roughest material, hard work and time are necessary for transformation, and the finest things emerge from the hardest wood. Similarly, our lives are continually shaped by God’s transformative work.

17 Herod was the one who had John the Baptist arrested and bound in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, whom he had married. 18 John had said to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” 19 Herodias harbored a grudge against him and wanted to kill him but was unable to do so. 20 Herod feared John, knowing him to be  a righteous and holy man, and kept him in custody. When he heard him speak, he was very much perplexed, yet he liked to listen to him. 21 She had an opportunity one day when Herod, on his birthday, gave a banquet for his courtiers, his military officers, and the leading men of Galilee. 22 Herodias’s own daughter came in and performed a dance that delighted Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl, “Ask of me whatever you wish and I will grant it to you.” 23 He even swore many things to her, “I will grant you whatever you ask of me, even to half of my kingdom.” 24 She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?” She replied, “The head of John the Baptist.” 25 The girl hurried back to the king’s presence and made her request, “I want you to give me at once on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” 26 The king was deeply distressed, but because of his oaths and the guests he did not wish to break his word to her. 27 So he promptly dispatched an executioner with orders to bring back his head. He went off and beheaded him in the prison. 28 He brought in the head on a platter and gave it to the girl. The girl in turn gave it to her mother. 29 When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb. (Mark 6:17-29)

Gracious Savior, who bore the weight of the cross, In John’s footsteps, we find echoes of sacrifice, His life a prelude to Your own suffering, a symphony of faithfulness, etched in eternity. As we journey through the wilderness of existence, may we, too, accept life’s inevitable end, not with despair, but with eyes fixed on the horizon, where eternal life awaits, a promise unshaken. Grant us the boldness of John, the desert prophet, His voice like cedar, unwavering in truth, may we speak Your principles, even when thorns pierce, for Your truth transforms hearts, as wood yields to the chisel. In the crucible of adversity, shape us, O Carpenter, smooth our rough edges, sand away our pride, for potential lies dormant within our souls, and time, like a master craftsman, carves character. When the tempests rage and the world trembles, may we stand firm, rooted in Your promises, enduring faithfully, knowing that splinters lead to glory, and the finest things emerge from the hardest wood. Lord Jesus, our Redeemer, our Emmanuel, we yield to Your transformative work, as the grain of our lives aligns with Your purpose, may we be vessels of grace, shaped by love’s hands. Amen.

God wants us to be steadfast and courageous despite the challenges we will encounter. In our lives, we may face opposition, but we can trust God’s guidance and stand firm in our faith. As Christians, we may also be called to suffer for Christ’s sake. Rituals lose meaning when performed by a disobedient heart. Our worship must align with God’s calling for us. Let us seek inner authenticity and trust God’s timing.

17 The world of the Lord came to me thus: Gird your loins; stand up and tell them all that I command you. Be not crushed on their account, as though I would leave you crushed before them; 18 For it is I this day who have made you a fortified city, a pillar of iron, a wall of brass, against the whole land: Against Judah’s kings and princes, against its priests and people. 19 They will fight against you, but not prevail over you, for I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord. (Jeremiah 1:17-19)

Gracious Father, in the midst of life’s trials and storms, You call us to be steadfast, unwavering, and warm. Challenges may rise, opposition may assail, Yet we trust Your guidance, our anchor in the gale. For Christ’s sake, we willingly bear the cross, Suffering molds us, revealing what is truly our loss. May our hearts remain obedient, our worship sincere, Not mere rituals, but devotion drawing You near. Align our souls with Your sacred purpose, we pray, In quiet surrender, seeking Your will each day. Grant us courage, authenticity from within, As we trust Your timing, knowing You’re with us, even in the din. Lord, make us vessels of Your grace and light, May our lives reflect Your love, shining bright. In faith, we stand firm, unyielding and true, For You, O God, are our strength, our refuge, our view. Amen.

Jesus wants us to persevere in our faith, regardless of circumstances. To maintain our walk with Him, we should depend on Him throughout our entire lives and trusting Him at every step. Making a life-long commitment to seeking God ensures that He provides for our needs. We should share our testimony and engage in evangelism throughout our lives. When we face challenges, let’s remain grateful to Jesus. Our walk with Jesus should include life-long worship and praise.

1 In you, O Lord, I take refuge; let me never be put to shame. 2 In your justice rescue me, and deliver me; incline your ear to me, and save me. (R) 3 Be my rock of refuge, a stronghold to give me safety, for you are my rock and my fortress. 4 O my God, rescue me from the hand of the wicked. (R) 5 For you are my hope, O Lord; my trust, O God, from my youth. 6 On you I depend from birth; from my mother’s womb you are my strength. (R) 15 My mouth shall declare your justice, day by day your salvation. 17 O God, you have taught me from my youth, and till the present I proclaim your wondrous deeds. (Psalm 71:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 15, 17)

Dear Heavenly Father, in the journey of faith, we seek Your face, amidst life’s trials, storms, and grace, Jesus, our guide, our unwavering light, help us persevere, even in the darkest night. We trust You, Lord, with every step we take, dependent on Your love, our refuge and stake, throughout our lives, may we seek Your ways, A lifelong commitment, in worship and praise. Provide for our needs, O gracious God, As we share our testimony, hearts awed, Evangelism’s call, our purpose clear, Spreading Your truth, dispelling fear. In challenges and blessings, we remain, Grateful hearts, Jesus, Your name we proclaim, our walk with You, eternal and true, may our lives reflect Your love anew. Amen.
