Cleanse First the Inside

"Blind Pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup,
so that the outside also may be clean.”
(Matthew 23:26)

Jesus emphasizes that while tithing herbs and seeds is commendable, it should not overshadow more significant matters. We should focus on justice (treating others fairly), mercy (showing compassion), and faith (trusting God) as central aspects of our lives. We must examine our hearts to ensure our actions align with our beliefs. Attention to small details is essential, but not at the expense of love, compassion, and faith. It’s not just about following rules; it’s about cultivating a genuine relationship with God and others. Let us strive for a holistic approach to righteousness.

23 Jesus said: “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You pay tithes of mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier things of the law: judgment and mercy and fidelity. But these you should have done, without neglecting the others. 24 Blind guides, who strain out the  gnat and swallow the camel! 25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You cleanse the outside of cup and dish, but inside they are full of plunder and self-indulgence. 26 Blind Pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup, so that the outside also may be clean.” (Matthew 23:23-26)

Lord Jesus, our Shepherd and Guide, In the quiet chambers of our hearts, we seek You. You who spoke of justice, mercy, and faith, whose words echo through the ages, timeless and true. Grant us discernment, O Savior, as we navigate life’s intricate pathways. May we not be blinded by the minutiae but fix our gaze on the weightier matters— Justice, like a balanced scale, impartial and fair, Mercy, like a soothing balm, healing wounds, and faith, like an unwavering anchor, steadfast and sure. Help us examine our hearts, dear Jesus, for often we tread the narrow path, yet neglect the wideness of Your love. May our actions align with our beliefs, not mere rituals, but expressions of devotion, Rooted in a genuine relationship with You. Teach us to tithe not only herbs and seeds, But the abundance of grace You freely give. May our lives be a symphony of compassion, A dance of love, a testament to faith. And when we stand before Your throne, may our righteousness be holistic— Woven with threads of justice, mercy, and unwavering trust. Amen.

Paul addresses the Thessalonians’ concerns about the return of Jesus. He distinguishes between two aspects of Jesus’ coming: Coming for His Church where believers are caught up to be with Jesus and Coming with His Church to judge a rebellious world. These two aspects are part of one great event, emphasizing hope and judgment.

Paul encourages them not to be easily swayed by false teachings or rumors. We, too, should remain steadfast in our faith, trusting God’s timing and find comfort in His love.

Jesus’ teachings imply restrictions against defamation, rumor-spreading, and careless speech that could harm others’ reputations. False beliefs and teachings can be accepted without being tested. Heresy (non-Biblical or anti-Biblical teaching) can even creep into churches. As believers, we are called to guard against false teachings and to speak truth in love. Seeking wisdom and understanding from God’s Word is essential in discerning truth from falsehood.

1 We ask you, brothers and sisters, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our assembling with him, 2 not to be shaken out of your minds suddenly, or to be alarmed either by a “spirit,” or by an oral statement, or by a letter allegedly from us to the effect that the day of the Lord is at hand. 3 Let no one deceive you in any way. 14 To this end he has also called you through our Gospel to possess the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 Therefore, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours. 16 May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting encouragement and good hope through his grace, 17 encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good deed and word. (2 Thessalonians 2:1-3, 14-17)

Heavenly Father, in the quiet chambers of our souls, we seek Your wisdom. You are the Source of all truth, the Light that dispels darkness, and the Anchor that steadies our hearts. As believers, we come before You, recognizing the weight of our words and the power they hold. When rumors swirl like tempests, when half-truths dance upon the winds of gossip, grant us discernment. May our ears be attuned to Your voice, filtering out the noise of falsehoods. Help us recognize the difference between mere speculation and the solid ground of Your Word. Lord, our tongues are unruly flames, capable of both warmth and destruction. Teach us restraint. May we not spread careless words that wound, but rather speak life and encouragement. Let our conversations be seasoned with grace, salted with love, and rooted in truth. In a world where false teachings creep like shadows, protect us. May we be vigilant guardians of Your Word, testing every doctrine against its sacred pages. When heresy knocks at our hearts, grant us discernment to recognize it and courage to reject it. Let our faith be anchored in Christ alone. As we seek wisdom from Your Word, illuminate our minds. Open our eyes to hidden truths, unravel mysteries, and reveal the depths of Your love. May we hunger for understanding, knowing that true wisdom begins with reverence for You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

The Lord is the King who governs with righteousness and justice. His coming judgment is not a cause for dread; it’s a reason for rejoicing. His judgment is founded on righteousness and truth. It sets things right, bringing justice and restoration. May we worship, witness, and eagerly await the day when the Lord’s righteous reign will fully manifest. Let our hearts join the cosmic chorus, declaring His glory!

10 Say among the nations: the Lord is king. He has made the world firm, not to be moved; he governs the peoples with equity. (R) 11 Let the heavens be glad and the earth rejoice; let the sea and what fills it resound; 12 let the plains be joyful and all that is in them! Then shall all the trees of the forest exult. (R) 13 Before the Lord, for he comes; for he comes to rule the earth. He shall rule the world with justice and the peoples with his constancy. (Psalm 96:10, 11-12, 13)

O Lord, our King, who governs with righteousness and justice, We lift our hearts to You, knowing that Your coming judgment is not a cause for dread, but a reason for rejoicing. Your judgment is founded on righteousness and truth, Setting things right in a world often marred by darkness and confusion. You bring justice and restoration, healing the brokenness we see around us. May we worship You with reverence and awe, Witnessing Your mighty works and the unfolding of Your divine plan. Eagerly, we await the day when Your righteous reign will fully manifest, When every tear will be wiped away, and every wrong made right. Let our hearts join the cosmic chorus, declaring Your glory, As we bow before You, our Savior, our Redeemer, our Hope. May Your name be exalted, and Your love be known throughout all creation. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
