Righteous and Holy

Gospel
Mark 6:17-29

17 Herod was the one who had John the Baptist arrested and bound in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, whom he had married. 18 John had said to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” 19 Herodias harbored a grudge against him and wanted to kill him but was unable to do so. 20 Herod feared John, knowing him to be  a righteous and holy man, and kept him in custody. When he heard him speak, he was very much perplexed, yet he liked to listen to him. 21 She had an opportunity one day when Herod, on his birthday, gave a banquet for his courtiers, his military officers, and the leading men of Galilee. 22 Herodias’s own daughter came in and performed a dance that delighted Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl, “Ask of me whatever you wish and I will grant it to you.” 23 He even swore many things to her, “I will grant you whatever you ask of me, even to half of my kingdom.” 24 She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?” She replied, “The head of John the Baptist.” 25 The girl hurried back to the king’s presence and made her request, “I want you to give me at once on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” 26 The king was deeply distressed, but because of his oaths and the guests he did not wish to break his word to her. 27 So he promptly dispatched an executioner with orders to bring back his head. He went off and beheaded him in the prison. 28 He brought in the head on a platter and gave it to the girl. The girl in turn gave it to her mother. 29 When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

Background:

In this passage, we encounter the sordid events surrounding the death of John the Baptist. Herod himself had John arrested and imprisoned because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife. John had boldly told Herod that it was unlawful for him to have his brother’s wife. Herodias nursed a grudge against John and desired to kill him.

Context:

Herodias was the granddaughter of Herod the Great. The imprisonment took place in the castle of Machærus, near the southern extremity of Herod’s dominions, adjacent to the Dead Sea.

This passage highlights the tension between righteousness and worldly desires. John’s unwavering commitment to truth led to his imprisonment and eventual execution. It serves as a sobering reminder of the cost of standing up for God’s principles in a fallen world.

May we also seek inner transformation and faithfulness, even when faced with opposition.

Learning Lessons:

John fearlessly confronted Herod about his unlawful marriage to Herodias, even though it led to his imprisonment. We learn that standing up for God’s principles may come at a cost, but it’s essential to speak truth even in difficult circumstances.

John’s suffering and eventual martyrdom foreshadowed Christ’s own suffering. Just as John accepted the end of his earthly life, we’re reminded that following Christ may involve sacrifice and suffering, but it ultimately leads to eternal life.

Standing up for God’s principles may come at a cost, but it’s essential to speak truth even in difficult circumstances. Potential lies within even the roughest material, hard work and time are necessary for transformation, and the finest things emerge from the hardest wood. Similarly, our lives are continually shaped by God’s transformative work.

May we emulate John’s boldness, seek inner transformation, and endure faithfully, trusting in God’s promises.

“Transforming Wood”

In the quiet of the carpenter’s shop,
Where sawdust dances in sunbeam’s grace,
A gnarled piece of wood lies waiting,
Its rough edges whispering secrets of time.

John, the forerunner, knew such wood,
His life carved by purpose and sacrifice,
A splintered path leading to the cross,
Where suffering met redemption’s embrace.

His voice echoed through desert winds,
Bold and unyielding, like seasoned oak,
Proclaiming the Lamb who would bear all,
As splinters pierced both flesh and soul.

And so, we too stand on this threshold,
Our lives shaped by trials and faith,
The grain of our existence etched by grace,
As we yield to the Carpenter’s hands.

For potential lies within even the roughest,
And hard work transforms the ordinary,
Time, the chisel that carves character,
And endurance births beauty from pain.

Speak truth, though winds howl fiercely,
For the finest things emerge from the hardest,
And in the crucible of suffering, we find,
Not just splinters, but the promise of eternity.

Lord Jesus,

Gracious Savior, who bore the weight of the cross, In John’s footsteps, we find echoes of sacrifice, His life a prelude to Your own suffering, A symphony of faithfulness, etched in eternity.

As we journey through the wilderness of existence, may we, too, accept life’s inevitable end, not with despair, but with eyes fixed on the horizon, where eternal life awaits, a promise unshaken.

Grant us the boldness of John, the desert prophet, His voice like cedar, unwavering in truth, may we speak Your principles, even when thorns pierce, For Your truth transforms hearts, as wood yields to the chisel.

In the crucible of adversity, shape us, O Carpenter, smooth our rough edges, sand away our pride, for potential lies dormant within our souls, and time, like a master craftsman, carves character.

When the tempests rage and the world trembles, may we stand firm, rooted in Your promises, enduring faithfully, knowing that splinters lead to glory, And the finest things emerge from the hardest wood.

Lord Jesus, our Redeemer, our Emmanuel, we yield to Your transformative work, As the grain of our lives aligns with Your purpose, may we be vessels of grace, shaped by love’s hands.

Amen.
